In this podcast a live interview with ED KUEPPER recorded after his soundcheck at the Olympia at Paris June 9th for the last show of his European tour 2008 with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Ed Kuepper just before the show; Ed at the show during Eternally yours

The interview is simultaneously translated in French by my friend Eric Tessier who hosts the rock show “Place aux fous musique” on the French Anarchist radio “Radio Libertaire” : a premiere on Meltingpod !! Eric couldn’t air the interview before the end of July, that’s why I waited.
I illustrated the interview with some excerpts of my live recordings at the soundcheck, specially when from the very first minutes both Bad Seeds Warren Ellis at the violin and Martyn Casey at the bass joined Ed Kuepper and Jeffrey Wegener to improvise together fot the first time on “Eternally yours” !!! A very nice surprise !

Jeffrey, Ed, Warren and Martyn at the soundcheck working on Eternally yours; Ed and Eric after the interview in the dressing room.

But the acoustic was very hard at the Olympia ( a new venue in fact, the old one has been destroyed a few years ago!!) and the sound engineer is working during my recording : not easy in that context to capture a correct sound but this recording was the unique memory of that interesting work; so I chose to keep some short moments like a very special noisy version from “Nights in Venice” at the end !! L’Olympia : a new punk venue ?

Ed’s sound engineer at the desk; The unique place to hear a sound which was not too much saturated in that prestigious venue !!

Ed announced in the interview his own label “Prince Melon records”‘ re-launching and his first live album’s release under this label. You could order on line his new production on the Prince Melon records page on myspace : Sir Alfonso will offer you for the visit a free downloading of a live bootleg recorded in November 2007 at Brisbane with the Kowalski Collective : don’t miss it and try to support his initiative if you believe in the independant music !!
You can as well support Meltingpod by clicking on my kangaroo logo on the right column of this blog and become an Happy Donator : even if it’s symbolic, it’s important to be present !

Ed Kuepper Live at l’Olympia : videos recorded at his show at Paris during his European tour with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Vendredi, juin 27th, 2008

I filmed Ed Kuepper during some moments of his show at l’Olympia at Paris with my usual camera using the “video” option without a lot of expectations for the sound quality but the result is not too bad…anyway it’s surely (or one of ??) the unique recording from this nice performance with two members of the Bad Seeds who joined Ed and his drummer Jeffrey Wegener to improvise together around “Eternally yours” : Warren Ellis added his violin (like on the Jean-Lee album) and Martyn P. Casey his bass.

The seduced French audience during Ed Kuepper’s show at l’Olympia !!

On another side it signed at least my entrance in youtube as a video producer !!! the first Meltingvideopod I launched years ago as a test (November 3rd 2005) with the Streetwalkin’cheetahs was a promotion for that band I like but not my own production (no recorder fot that)…so enjoy this new and first experience and support Meltingworlds by Paypal if you want me buying a true videocamera for a best result next time !!…:)

And Vote for Ed with winning maybe Ed’s albums on that link before July 3rd : www.air.org.au for “Australia’s Greatest Independent Albums of All Time” !! Ed has 4 nominations (on the selected 50), including his first solo album Eletrical Storm , as well as Honey Steels Gold and Laughing Clowns ‘Mr Uddich Schuddich goes to town’. His first recording from 1976 [I'm] Stranded by the original Saints is nominated as a single.

#82 Ed Kuepper LIVE at l’Olympia Paris and at the Tempodrom Berlin : Interview (part3) in the Tiergarten during his European tour 2008 with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

I start this podcast with ED KUEPPER opening his show at l’Olympia June 9th at Paris with one my favorite song “the way I made you feel”!!

Ed Kuepper and Jeffrey Wegener during their show at l’Olympia

Martyn P.Casey from the Bad Seeds joining Ed and Jeffrey on stage

That concert closed his 3 weeks long european tour with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds with some great moments : Martyn P. Casey and Warren Ellis (the violonist and bass guitarist from the Bad Seeds) joined Ed and Jeffrey on stage for an unforgettable version from Eternally yours (videos clips soon : stay connected !!).; at the end of Nick Cave’ s show Ed and Jeffrey joined the Bad Seeds…Paris was lucky and me too !!

For the last song a big jam : Ed Kuepper, Warren Ellis (violin) and Nick Cave (back on the piano); the three drummers together : Thomas Wydler, Jeffrey Wegener and Jim Sclavunos !!

We continued the interview (part 3) in a very quiet, peaceful and intimate garden with flowers we found out walking in the Tiergarten at Berlin without a precise idea of the North…in fact a place for confidences and Ed spoke about his temporary blockage to write any song or play live after producing 12 (or 15 ?) albums between 1990 and 1997 , how he started again and his new approach of the music now !!

In that podcast I played “Horse under water” recorded during the show at the Tempodrom, “Rainy night” and Everything I got belongs to you” recorded during the soundcheck at l’Olympia…Ed tested all the time new versions with Jeffrey and it’s really an endless pleasure…:)

Some relaxing moments with Jeffrey in the dressing room at l’Olympia, with the Bad Seeds in the street at Paris (Matt Crosby the sound engineer and Conway Savage the pianist) !!

There will be a part 4 proposing a new interview recorded with Ed at l’Olympia and my friend Eric Tessier who hosts the bi-weekly rock show “Place aux fous musique” from Radio Libertaire, a national French radio spread by the Anarchist Federation (simultaneously translated in French); the podcast will be published after he will air the show July 25th…here I just played an extract with some great news about Ed’s projects for the second part of 2008 !! We couldn’t wait to share that with you !!

Update June 25th : interesting interviews with Ed (in 2002 to 2005) on that site at “Tarentula!” by Christopher Hollow.

#81 Ed Kuepper LIVE at Berlin : interview from the Saints to the Laughing Clowns and more… Live music recorded at the Tempodrom during his European tour 2008 Podcast Part 2

Dimanche, juin 1st, 2008

We continue the interview with ED KUEPPER in the Tiergarten at Berlin speaking about his musical evolution, how he experimented different line-ups and instruments to approach and satisfy his idea of the sound… from the “first” Saints to the Laughing Clowns and more…I start with playing excerpts from “Honey Steels’ Gold” recorded during the show, “If I had a ticket” (a cover from Phil Jones and the unknown blues) and “Horse under water” at the end (the whole song with Ed’s agreement) recorded at the soundcheck : the empty Tempodrom at that time sounded as a cathedral…a great moment for me and I hope for you too !!

#80 Ed Kuepper LIVE interview and music at Berlin during his European tour with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds : Soundcheck in the Tempodrom and Interview in the Tiergarten Podcast Part 1

Jeudi, mai 29th, 2008

At least I met ED KUEPPER in person at Berlin and he offered me the possibility to record his both soundchecks and live shows May 21th and 22th…alone with him, his drummer Jeffrey Wegener and the sound engineer in the Tempodrom the biggest venue at Berlin and a few hours later packed with 3500 people : I really loved the intimacy of the soundchecks but the shows were very exciting too and good !!!

Alone in the Tempodrom at Berlin with Ed Kuepper and Jeffrey Wegener at the soundcheck

The second day in the afternoon I recorded one hour interview with Ed Kuepper in the Tiergarten a wonderful park in the middle of Berlin : my idea was to approach his musical evolution during 35 years.
In this podcast part one we started at Brême-Germany where Ed was born, then his childhood in Australia and his beginning with the “second band” : “Kid Galahad and the Eternals aka the Saints”…be patient : a small ridiculous little wind wasted the five first minutes of the recording but fortunately I detected it. I illustrate the interview with some of my live recordings at the soundcheck with : “When I first came to this land, Rainy night, Honey steel’s gold, The way I made you feel” + an unexpected cover from Skip James “Cypress Grove Blues” by Ed and Jeffrey + a cover I chose from the Troggs “I want you” by the Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs featuring Wayne Kramer to illustrate Ed’s talk about this first song they played with Chris and Ivor at their high school party…+ a short interview with Jeffrey at the end recorded after the second show : he even sang me a song…:)

Great news : Ed Kuepper and his drummer Jeffrey Wegener are Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds‘ special guests for a fantastic European tour around almost all the capitals, starting for Ed at Oslo May 16th to finish June 9th at…Paris !!!

(pics Glen 0′Malley; projections from Judi Dransfield-Kuepper).

As always Ed is very precise and sincere to answer to my questions and he develops his “romantic” concept about his live performances…Warning ! you could become addict and book all of his shows !
I played “My best interest at heart”, “When I first came to this land” and “Flypaper”…A friend’s advice if you want to know more about Ed, order his both compilations (49 songs exactly each time !!) : “The Magic Mile” (Ed Kuepper) or “Cruel but Fair” (the Laughing Clowns).
Ed sent me unreleased versions from “the Laughing Clowns” and “Eternally yours” to give you an idea of his duo guitar-vocals and drums with Jeffrey…a big pleasure in perspective if you can catch a show near your town :

BTW : I didn’t completly recover ( I still was too bad to see Nick Cave’ show at Marseille April 26h !!) but I hope to be able to meet Ed Kuepper somewhere in Europe…:)
If this website is still alive (my server Free cut my account because of a violent spammers’ attack during my sickness) it’s thanks to some of my friends who answered present and saved my database, updated my Wordpress version like Markus from Berlin, the French podcasters like Luc Saint-Elie from Paris (the first French male podcaster who helped me the first French female podcaster to start her blog in 2005 !!) and Alain Thomas from Bordeaux (Palmipode).
Thanks to you three and thanks to all my listeners who regularly (sometimes daily !!) sent me messages of love during these bad last two months : it was very very precious to avoid to give up !!
But working on a computer stays very painful for my neck and arm and I think I will publish just a few podcasts this year with the most important interviews for me or “quick and easy made” with music only…so stay connected !

19/02/08 Thoughts to Bon Scott from France to Australia : Trust playing Your Final Act and the Bon Scott Celebration Concert 2008 at Fremantle

Mardi, février 19th, 2008

Bernie Bonvoisin from TRUST singing Your final act : “(I wish I had been there) I wouldn’t have left you…I would have kept you warm…this man was my friend…he was called Bon Scott !”
A lot of people surely thought the same thing than Bernie since that day of February 19th 1980 where Bon Scott died alone abandoned unconscious in a car during a very freezing night in London, far away from home.
I know it gave the energy to my friend Buzz Bidstrup to organize as artistic director this big event the Aussie Rockers Saluting Bon Scott at Fremantle (where Bon is burried) reuniting a lot of Bon’s friends and fans for a concert last year and raising the money to erect a statue to Bon there. In a few days February 24th they will unveil the statue and will give a second show around “him” ! More details about the line-up HERE !
A new interview will be recorded with Buzz…soon !
I specially dedicate these pics taken at the Trust’s show at Istres last December to Arnaud “Bon Scott Rawpower” (Bon Scott Ultimate Fan from North of France…:) who devoted a big part of his time to honor Bon’s memory and share his passion for AC/DC with Ben in this fantastic website : Back in Black and their new webzine Can’t stop AC/DC.

Meltingpod Connections :
Happy to read other French people in the TRUST FORUM thought to Bon today. A link for you with Buzz’s last interview in 2007 about the show at Fremantle and his personal memories with Bon !! and to the others Australian rock stars’ interviews (AC/DC, The Angels, Rose Tattoo, Status Quo…) recorded during the show (in English sorry…:)

6/02/08 Meltingpics Retrospective 2007 : The Lords of the New Church in England, Rose Tattoo in Germany, GANGgajang and the Rock and Roll Heaven in Australia !!

Mercredi, février 6th, 2008

I got a lot of pictures from my listeners in 2007 and I promised to choose some of them to publish on Meltingpod : so you could appreciate the work of some of these great passionated rock photographers :
Sandra Smith a French woman who made the trip to London October 31th to see one of her favorite bands : The Lords of the New Church with :

Dave Tregunna at the bass, Adam Becvare at the guitar and vocals,

Brian James at the guitar and Toby Vishram on the drums

Then Helene Keller (Helik) a German woman who took such beautiful pics from Rose Tattoo at Postdam (near Berlin) July 27th :

Geordie Leach and Angry Anderson, Paul De Marco, Mick Cocks

At least Errol Laggner an Australian man who had the privilege to be at the big rock event scheduled December 15th at Wollongong in Australia “Rock and Roll Heaven” with a lot of the greatest Aussie rock bands like Rose Tattoo, the Angelsband, The Screaming Jets, Choirboys, GANGgajang, The Radiators, Party Boys playing together raising money to build the Dunn & Lewis Memorial Youth Centre; Errol sent me many many pics but I haven’t a pics gallery on this blog and I just chose GANGgajang a band I interviewed without having recent live pics to illustrate my last podcast with :

Geoff Stapleton, Mark Callaghan, Robert James, Chris Bailey and…Buzz Bidstrup ! + a part of this great line-up at the Rock and Roll Heaven with :

Geoff Stapleton, Robert James, Rick Brewster, (John’s son, Tom Brewster who replaced Buzz on the drums with the Angelsband : Buzz played with GANGgajang and the Party Boys on that show), Kevin Borich, John Brewster, Daï Pritchard, Dave Gleeson, Angry Anderson and Buzz !!
A great emotion watching that pic and thinking I did interviews with almost all these musicians the last three years thank to Buzz…:)
So thank you again Sandra, Helene and Errol and thank to you all who sent me your pics or comments the whole last year and actively participated to the Meltingpod’s life !!

#76 CaVe CaNeM and Yolka from Marseille, Lars Wallin from Sweden, Buffalo from Australia : a good Meltingpod to start 2008 full of energy !!

CaVe CaNeM (Fred & Julien) Lars Wallin & his live band (ph. bands websites)

At least fresh news from the rock bands at Marseille after a whole year speaking only about Australia !! I know a lot of listeners found my choice not well-balanced so this year 2008 I will try to honour my reputation of the first French-Australian rock podcast but I will try to record more live shows in my town or around the world who knows ?
In this podcast we start with CaVe CaNeM a new band from Marseille with Fred De Benedetti (guitar vocals) and Julien Lemonnier (tenor sax vocals), both programming their computer (the third member on stage !!) with two songs : “Chez les parents de Cécile” and Fast car”. I got their promo album after their live incredible show at the machine à coudre last Friday; they recorded it in one day, at the first take : everything is “home made” !!!
The way I love the music and the musicians !!
You can order their first 6 songs at : cavecanemprod(at)yahoo.fr

CaVe CaNeM’s promo album : self-made by cavecanemprod !!

Through the same way Yolka another new band from Marseille is writting and recording song by song (they got two) at home with Pascal Ferrari at the guitar (+ computer) and Karolina at the vocals (in Polish); I played their last song Zima and I can’t wait to listen to the new ones !
Then Lars Wallin from Udevalla-Sweden who just released his first album “Bangardi Pogo”: I chose his song “On the road to Maningrida”…a road I hope to take one day myself (with him ?) in the Northern Territories in Australia to meet his aboriginal friends. He recorded the album at the first take too in 6 hours + a little bit bass, guitar, handclaps and cajun drum added in the studio at the end. Emotion guaranteed !
Then “Dune Messiah” : a song from Buffalo a famous Australian band from the seventies with Dave Tice at the vocals, John Baxter at the guitar, Pete Wells at the bass (who later formed Rose Tattoo) and Jimmy Economou on the drums; you could find it in their album released in 74 freshly called : “Only want you for your body” !!
Thanks to Michael from “Sittin in a bar in Adelaïde” for his greetings to me from Australia with the Angels (John Brewster and Chris Bailey) !!

Buffalo in 74 (Left to Right : Dave Tice, Pete Wells, John Baxter and Jimmy Economou) Yolka (ph : bands websites)

BTW : More about Pascal Ferrari in THIS PODCAST I recorded with him in May 2005 as well about Lars Wallin with THAT PODCAST recorded in November 2005 and you could also find Fred De Benedetti with his other band Kill the thrill in THIS PODCAST recorded in June 2005 : you could follow the evolution of these musicians and my progress in English…:)
A last word : Don’t hesitate to SUPPORT THE INDEPENDANT MUSIC/PODCAST IN SELF PRODUCTION !! It’s our future !!

Meltingpod Connections :
Update January 21th : TRUST is announcing a FRENCH TOUR 2008 with 17 shows and more to be confirmed soon !!

Podcast Info : Here is Dave Tice’s e-mail about the song Dune Messiah :
Hi Annie,
I’ve attached an MP3 of ‘Dune Messiah’ hope you get it OK.
The song is inspired by Frank Herbert’s book of the same name, … (more…)

4/12/07 The French rock band TRUST in concert near Marseille at l’Usine at Istres December 2sd !! 1977-2007 : Happy 30th Birthday TODAY !!

Mardi, décembre 4th, 2007

Nono (Norbert Krief : lead guitar) and Bernie Bonvoisin (vocals); Farid Medjane (drums); Iso (Izotronik : bass) and Vivi (Yves Brusco : rythmic guitar); Nono (click to enlarge the pics).

TRUST…a legendary French band…I don’t like to use that word “legendary” but in this case I can’t say anything else except maybe : the first French band who played a good rock and roll singing clever and forceful lyrics without compromises for 30 years (with some breaks) : a lucid look about our contemporary society which definetely is necessary specially in France ! They played last Sunday near Marseille at Istres and are partying tonight at Paris (l’Olympia) for their 30th anniversary ! Yeah ! Trust quickly started in 77 with a huge and enthusiastic response among the youth and at Istres’ show (sold out!!) the faithful audience was there singing every famous lyrics at each song…sometimes with a best memory than Bernie himself…:)
That night I was LiveInMarseille’s official photographer (thanks Stefan) and I at least bought a new camera !! I was allowed to take pics in front of the stage during “the three first songs” only (what a rule ?! admitted almost everywhere in Europe now without any logic for me) and then invited to be crushed among the crowd and in the necessity to continue as “a pirate”?? chased by the security !! Everybody knows the musicians and the photographers need to be “warm” to give their best but nobody knows when the connection between the both will happen : I would be very curious to hear the musicians’ point of views about this incredible rule.
Anyway I hope you will enjoy the photos.

Songs speaking about men with special destinies like “Mesrine” (with Deck the scratcher above the drums); Bernie introducing in a song called “your final act” his friend Bon Scott (very close to the band unill his last days); Massoud (commander in Afghanistan) : a new song with only Nono (at the acoustic guitar) and Bernie : a shared close moment…

Bernie more relaxed at the end, joking, dancing, abandoning at least his dark glasses and offering us a quiet and smiling face. Long life to TRUST !

BTW : A special thought to Mick Cocks, Rose Tattoo’s guitarist who turned me again to Bernie and Trust asking news from them in our live interview at Lyon-France in April 2007 : I hope you are both connected again too !

Meltingpod Connections :
Update December 8th : I found a “new family” in the TRUST FORUM and a link to some pretty cool videos extracted from THE LIVE SHOW at ISTRES filmed from the first line…Bernie showed many times how he was not against these “friendly pirates” encouraging to flash “as an exception” Farid the drummer to salute him (my pic above). It has a bootleg quality but

the sound is not bad…Nono in a great form, Bernie apologizing on the knees to have broken a mic, the crowd singing…the ambience is there !!

Dec 5th : A fresh report about Trust’s show at l’Olympia (Paris) December 4th on ZICAZIC (in French). Bravo Fred to have done it in the same night !!

TRUST LIVE recently with a song without age…: “L’élite” !!

25/11/07 Interview with Philippe Jazarin de la Machine à coudre on Meltingtalks (in French)

Lundi, novembre 26th, 2007

Philippe Jazarin de la Machine a coudre a man who loved the women and the rock and roll, more exacly who loved everybody and the music.
He opened my favorite punk rock and roll’s venue at Marseille and he was my friend. The podcast interview is on line on Meltingtalks in French.

You answered to me with your usual humor last October 5th when I wanted to come and see you and to do an interview with you : “You come to record my testament before I die ?”. I answered to you : “No, there were more than two years we had to do that interview !”. But we both knew the time was very short to do it : Philippe died last Thursday November 22th…
I edited that interview as you wanted it : without cutting anything !!
May the aboriginal spirits help you on the other side…kisses…
You remember : “for me you’re Marseille’s punk rock and roll heart”…and for that you will never die !!
