3/02/06 Melting-Australia !

Vendredi, février 3rd, 2006

Last week I met in Cannes Shane Chisholm from Melbourne-Australia one of my first Meltingpod listener : he supported me for a year, commented almost every shows…we never saw each other before…I met him virtually in Automn 2004 on the Rock and Roll geek Show’s message board: we supported both at that time this podcast very seriously ! Now Shane is the co-producer of Michael Butler’s podcast. At Nice airport, Shane tried to take the control of MY show and did an interview of me…!! We spoke about Rock and roll, Australian bands, memory about kangoroo, the music industry and the future of podcasting in the world…I play the Angels with “No Exit, Can’t shake it and Marseilles” recorded live in Melbourne in April 1980…a rarity I got for Christmas from my Angels French Connection !
PS : Shane is sending me the podcast title right now from Oslo-Norway !

5/12/05 Marseilles : The Angels’ song !

Lundi, décembre 5th, 2005

John Brewster, The Angels band‘ guitarist, singer and songwriter of the famous song “Marseilles” is my guest today with Buzz Bidstrup , the drummer, a Meltingpod regular visitor ! The Angels band were in tour in Australia and I called them on Buzz’s cell phone during their interesting activities before playing a show : driving too fast because being late, doing the soundcheck, quickly eating and before springing on stage…answering to Meltingpod and promising to sing Marseilles for Annie !
The first song in the show “Dreambuilder” comes from the first album “The Angels” (released in 1977 by Albert) with Doc Neeson at the vocals.
The new version of Marseilles (released the first time in the album “Face to Face” in 1978) comes from the Angels band’s last live album recorded at the Basement in Sydney in November 2004 (released in 2005).

Thanks to my friend Michael Butler who is playing for me a cool rock song called “Annie” from Copperpot on his last podcast in “the rock and roll geek indie cast and who introduced me to the song “Marseilles”!!
EUCD.info always is fighting against the vote of the DADVSI (examination at the National Assembly December 20 and 21th) : help their action ! help yourself ! this law is totally crazy for everybody ! Luc launched a forum on his website about this subject called the eStalinisme !

14/11/05 Safe between the Angels and the Saints

Mardi, novembre 15th, 2005

Buzz Bidstrup, the Angelsband’s drummer, songwriter, manager and producer, talks with me from Australia about copyrights, labels and agreements to play free music on the internet for non-profit podcasters who promote the bands : more a cool conversation than an classical interview. I played many songs of the Angels’ four first albums : “The Angels-Face to Face-No Exit-Dark Room” (1977 à 80 : Albert Productions) and the Angelsband’s last live album recorded at the Basement in Sidney in November 2004 (released by the Angelsband themselves). That’s Podsafe ?

Meltingpod Connections :
Thanks to Christophe for his precious website and work about the Angels’ discography (every released albums with dates, line-up and labels there !!).
Hamster Atomique has a nice blog too with a lot of stuff about Australia and every Angels, Angelscity, Angelsband.
ALERT !!! EUCD.INFO…if you can read French have a look about this interesting review, if not just look at the evocative pics…
The new law about the copyrights seems to be only a part of the iceberg…even the musicians could lose the possibilities to give their own music to download in free mp3 files on their own websites…logic, no ?!
What are we waiting for ???

Mercredi, septembre 7th, 2005

Meltingpod is back with a 50 minutes rock and roll show ! The Angelsband from Australia will be with us flying around Marseille to celebrate the half anniversary of Meltingpod.
Buzz Bidstrup the Angels’ drummer answered to my questions from his hotel room in Melbourne during their tour in Australia and you will have the pleasure to hear again the Angels old live versions of : “Marseille” and “Am I ever gonna to see your face again” until I get the new live album of the Angelsband and ” No secret” the song co-written by Buzz Bidstrup and Doc Neeson (who plays with his own band Red Phoenix at the moment).
We spoke with Buzz about the Angelsband’s new projects to tour Europe again, to come to Marseille for the first time (!!), his personal work as bands’ manager and projects’ developer with and for the Aborigenes. 1er Avril…2005

Vendredi, avril 1st, 2005

(The Angels in Paris 1981-pics J.Y.Legras; http://www.theangels.free.fr)

Today the Angels inspire me a lot of “Poissons d’avril” (April Scherz and April joke ?). I don’t know if this tradition runs around the world or if it’s typically European but the joke during the whole day is to tell somebody the most enormous thing it’s possible with the art to made this thing credible.
I want to play a little game with you : some things I wrote are true, other things are “Poisson d’Avril”:
1 - I got an e-mail this morning from the Angels with the following declaration : We, the Angels band, Buzz, John, Rick and Chris, promise on their honour to their French fans, they will play their famous song “Marseille” in Marseille maybe this year 2005, anyway before the end of the summer 2006.
2 - Doc Neeson their ex-vocalist sang this song during enough years with such a pleasure that he promises to come too.
3 - Buzz the drummer wrote to me he will come this week-end to Marseille to plan the concert.
4 - Their manager sent me the last version of Marseille to take my blues away because I learned Buzz can’t come now.
5 - John sings better the song “Marseille” than Doc because he wrote the lyrics and lives himself the story.
6 - The Angels always are a great band after thirty years.
7 - I have the blues because the Angels don’t play this week-end in Marseille and I must wait and I hate to wait.
You can vote : T for true, P for “Poisson d’avril” ! (The Angels themselves can play too). I will give the answers in the next podcast !

29/03/05 The Angels in Marseille ?

Mardi, mars 29th, 2005

Will the Angels come and sing to Marseille for the first time their famous song “Marseille” written in 1978…maybe this year ?
For those of you who don’t know about the Angels, they are an Australian band, formed in 1975 who toured with some famous people like AC/DC and David Bowie; they had a lot of success around the 80’s; after classic rock band adventure they reformed their “family” and toured again for around two years.

John Brewster told me yesterday how he wrote the lyrics “Marseille” :
Hi Annie,
Regarding the lyric of Marseille, I studied French at school, our teacher often visited France in his vacations and would show us photos of the places he had visited there, including Marseille. He helped bring the language to life by making us aware of the customs and culture - he truly loved France and the people.
One day I was driving my purple Renault down by the docks where some ships were tied up to the wharves, the band was in hard times (we hadn’t achieved success at this point) and I just felt in a mood to escape it all. For some reason my French lessons came back to my mind and I thought of Marseille.
The band played in Nice but so far I have never been to Marseille.
Best regards,
John

Nice story ! Be sure I will do my best to bring them to you ! They seem so cool people ! Exciting project, no ? Buzz, let down London and come better here to plan the next concert !
If you want to know more about the Angels, you can go the Rock and Roll geek show of my friend Michael Butler tonight (or tomorrow for France); he will post the interview he got with Rick, the guitarist and John’s brother.

20/03/05 Take me away to Marseille !

Dimanche, mars 20th, 2005

The second podcast is here : fresh made in Saturday night fever !!
A great night with The Angels flying above the city and singing “Take me away to Marseille”: specially dedicated to Balthazar from the Balthazar : Happy Birthday today ! Then a weird portrait of the town through Eddie Spaghetti from the Supersuckers and the “answer” from Leda Atomica. To go to sleep with nice dreams or to dance in bed : Neurotic Swingers (have a look at my pictures on their site : Artrats Party oct 2003 and French Fries Party oct 2004 !!).

In Marseille you must be ready to meet anybody !

Nota : In my podcast I only play songs written by friends or bands I know personally , it means they give me the right to play their songs…unfortunately I didn’t know personally the Angels from Australia but I e-mailed them to ask for their authorization to play “Marseille” and…a few hours later…I got a nice answer with their agreement and a proposal to send me the next version if I give my address : I love the Angels, welcome to Marseille ! The pictures you can see on this blog were taken by me.
