#92 Interview with Ed Kuepper joining at the guitar Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for touring the European Summer festivals and giving news about the Saints and Laughing Clowns shows at ATP 2009 in Australia Part 1
In this podcast and interview ED KUEPPER explains how he is joining NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS for their next European tour this Summer !! He is playing guitar in the band for a lot of festivals after Mick Harvey one of the founding member and guitarist left at the end of the ATP 2009 in Australia.

The Saints and the Bad Seeds at ATP in Sydney January 2009 (thanks Judi !)
Invited by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (ATP’s curators) Ed Kuepper and Chris Bailey reformed with their drummer Ivor Hay The Saints‘ original line-up for 6 shows during that festival last January and they added Archie Larizza at the bass and a three pieces horn section. We spoke with Ed about the rehearsals and specially about two songs I heard through the internet and recorded Live by fans : One Way Street in Melbourne (a new/old version!!) and Nights in Venice in Mt Buller.

But Nick Cave invited Ed to reform the Laughing Clowns for three shows at ATP too, two shows being scheduled in the same night than the Saints !! I played for the first time on Meltingpod some Laughing Clowns’ songs : “New Bully in the Town”,”As your bridges burn behind you” (studio versions) and a excerpt from “Come One Come All” (recorded Live at Mt Buller by a fan). In the second part of the podcast we will speak with Ed about the Laughing Clowns’ reunion after 25 years and their projects in the next future with more songs’ excerpts from that incredible band !!! (post punk ???..:)

Ah Annie, your interviews always make me laugh. Imagining Ed with his little whip, “Sing, damn you, sing!” *crack*

Ed’s voice and music sometimes sounds like the Cure and Robert Smith don’t you think?! He should enjoy playing with Nick Cave and his band, where musicians seems to have more fun live than the public.
Annie, now that you got answer to every single question you could ask Ed, who is your next victim? You need fresh air Annie!

Hi Michaela…thanks for your fine listening !
Pascal, you don’t disappoint me as a long time friend : a cold shower coming from San Francisco is always useful to refresh the burning brains in Marseille…:) but being or having been a Saints’ big fan : no mention about this exciting version from “One Way Street” ? and no curiosity for the Laughing Clowns ? too bad because the second part will be dedicated to them…with a special and new guest though : Ed already designated my next consenting victim…:) stay connected !!!

Annie, nice one, Ed is for sure a hard working musician with a great integrity about the music, one of the last ones that not aim to please everyone but goes his own ways.
Laughing Clowns is not post punk Annie, hehe, you can’t label their music, it’s just great music, Laughing Clowns music….
Great noisy raw “bootleg” recordings of The Saints too!
Kisses,
Tom

Comment from the bottom of a well. A very well.
From my very involved, knowledgeable and sensitive opinion, the inclusion of Ed in the Bad Seeds is a very natural and harmonious move. I cant think of anyone else who could have filled Mick’s departure. Artistically, historically, it had to be Ed for the Bad Seeds to remain an ensemble, the organic Bad Seeds, if one can say. Of course I’ll miss it all as i miss most of things these days but i could, in proper time, catch the Boys Next Door, the Birthday Party and the Laughing Clowns, amidst others great artists. You only live once that very long life !
Thanks Annie -and Ed- for a very pertinent and entertaining podcast. Pleasure be king ! Cheers !

Annie,
Great interview - thanks! Very interesting that my 2 favourite Saints songs after all these years are Nights in Venice, and One Way Street. Like you, I thought the January OWS version (which turns out to be the very old version) was an improvement on an already outstanding song. When I listened to it from the bootleg, I had tears in my eyes. I couldn’t make it back to Australia for the gigs (I really tried), but I will cherish the audience recordings. Love your site, and look forward to more.
Best regards,
Roy in Los Angeles, ex London, ex Melbourne.

Hi Annie
A nice one (as usual should I say). I was wondering if Ed would wear a suit and bang! you asked it… Your podcasts are always funny and pertinent. A big pleasure indeed.

Thanks Bob for the link in your site and Thanks Christian for your sensitive and personal report about this great musical Australian family !
BTW : I’m sure Ed will be touched by all your sincere worries about his next wardrobe…:)
Hello Roy from Los Angeles !! welcome to Meltingpod ! I’m so happy to find someone who specially appreciated these both songs : Nights in Venice always was my favorite song but WOW when I heard One Way Street in Melbourne I wished I was there to see Chris, Ed and Ivor playing that song : such a musical complicity still alive and so efficient on stage !!! I think we were many people lost in each corner of the world hoping to see that event LIVE !! Anyway Roy, pleased to meet you, stay in touch !!

Goddamn Annie !
This is what happens when I don’t listen to you for a while - you get the scoop on Ed joining the Bad Seeds ! That’s great news for Ed and I’m sure he’s going to add a lot … it’ll be nteresting to see how it develops.
And I bet you’re the first one to ask him about wearing a suit
